Who wrote the Book of Genesis?

Who is the author of Genesis in the Bible? How did he get this information? – Submitted by Assam, India.

Moses is thought to be the author of Genesis. The first five books of the Bible are often called the Books of Moses, and Jesus referred to these books in Luke 24:27: 'And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself.'

Moses would have got his information from two sources: one human, and the other divine. People in those days had good memories, and the stories of the Creation and all that followed after were recounted by father to son. The Scriptures also inform us that 'all Scripture is God-breathed' (KJV: 'given by inspiration of God).' And in 2 Peter 1:21 we read that 'men spoke from God as they were carried along by the Holy Spirit.'
